Persistent Neonatal Hypoglycemia
نویسنده
چکیده
Hypoglycemia is the most common metabolic alteration in neonatal period. Most of these neonates have transient hypoglycemia. However, persistent and recurrent hypoglycemia in neonates is usually caused by endocrine or metabolic disorders. These babies require frequent glucose monitoring to prevent hypoglycemic brain injury and advanced investigations for diagnosis of underlying etiology. An approach to diagnosis and management of persistent neonatal hypoglycemia has been discussed in present review. Congenital hyperinsulinism is a rare disorder can be associated with serious brain damage and neurodevelopmental delay in neonates. This disorder is an uncommon cause of neonatal hypoglycemia and most of the affected newborns are results of term pregnancies. In this paper, we report a case of persistent hypoglycemia due to congenital hyperinsulinism in a preterm neonate who also had hypertrophi...

We are reporting an infant with persistent abnormal liver function, neonatal jaundice, and intermittent hypoglycemia. Evaluation confirmed congenital hypopituitarism, in the absence of congenital anomalies and midline defect. His jaundice and abnormal liver function improved after treatment with Levothyroxine and hydrocortisone.

Sur1 knockout mouse beta-cells lack K(ATP) channels and show spontaneous Ca(2+) action potentials equivalent to those seen in patients with persistent hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia of infancy, but the mice are normoglycemic unless stressed. Sur1(-/-) islets lack first phase insulin secretion and exhibit an attenuated glucose-stimulated second phase secretion. Loss of the first phase leads to mi...
متن کاملNeonatal hypoglycaemia: an important early sign of endocrine disorders.
The incidence of hypoglycaemia is greatest in the neonatal period, and the condition is usually associated with "small for dates" infants, although rare causes have been described.' Persistent neonatal hypoglycaemia, however, is usually caused by endocrinopathies or disorders of hepatic metabolism.2 We present some ofour experience of endocrine disease presenting as neonatal hypoglycaemia as th...
